Abstract

This collection consists of a scrapbook of Ernest Otto articles, it is in good condition. There are also loose articles by Ernest Otto, ephemera, and a soft bound book “Ernest Otto’s ‘Old Santa Cruz’ Columns” compiled by Patricia Brien and Geoffrey Dunn.

Ernest Otto was a popular and well known citizen of Santa Cruz. He began his newspaper career soon after graduating from Santa Cruz High School in 1888. He worked for the Morning Talk then the Santa Cruz Surf and finally the Santa Cruz Sentinel. He wrote the “Old Timer,” “Old Santa Cruz” and/or “Waterfront” columns of the newspaper. In 1919 he became the editor for the Santa Cruz Sentinel, keeping this position for the rest of his career. He worked for various newspaper in various capacities for over 62 years.

Series Scope and Content Summary

This series contains a 13” x 16” forest green colored scrapbook of Ernest Otto articles, it is in good condition. There is also an envelope containing additional newspaper clippings of his many articles. This scrapbook contains many of Ernest Otto’s articles. Some of the articles are date stamped, many of them are not. The articles are of people, places, and events related to Santa Cruz County history. There are a few articles of Ernest Otto himself, birthday greetings and celebrations.

This series contains various ephemera collected by Ernest Otto. This ephemera includes business cards from Melvin’s Drug Store, a thank you note from Stefan Heller, a weekly newsletter from the Associated Press Media Editors containing an article about Ernest Otto, a 1946 photograph of the elder statesmen of the California Journalistic Community.

This series contains a book compiled by Patricia R. Brien and Geoffrey Dunn. The book is titled “Ernest Otto’s ‘Old Santa Cruz’ Columns.” The book contains copies of articles written by or about Ernest Otto from 1949 to 1955. All of the articles have a date written on them. The first page of the book contains an index to the newspaper stories.
