SERIES I.  PHOTOS OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS (1890s – 1930s)

Two (2) folders

Series Scope and Content Summary:

This series consists of sixteen large (16) studio ranging in size from approx. 9”x6” to 12”x10”. and thirty-nine (39) 6”x5”studio photographs and informal snapshots. The large studio photos are of the Conklins , relatives and family friends either in portraits or group photographs in the studio, at their residence, or place of work. Four (4) of the studio photos are in attractive, thick paper folders enclosing the photo are nearly all (except approx. 2) photos are surrounded by cardboard frames. Four (4) of the photos are of a storefront or interior of a store, and one (1) of these bears the name J.H. Sawtell Grocer but it is not clear how these photos are related to the Conklins as there are no inscriptions on the reverse. Roughly half of the photos have inscriptions identifying the individuals on the reverse and half do not. Some identified individuals are: The Weeden Family, Mr. and Mrs. T.A. Conklin, Nellor Conklin, and “Aunt Ora(or Ara) Richardson of N.H.” to name a few. Some photography studios represented in this series include: The Cutter Studio, Keene, N.H.; Boussum; Medlar of Woodstock , Ill.; Kohler Studio of Pasadena; and Baldwin Studio of Sacramento, CA and others. These photos are not dated, though they likely date from between 1896-the 1930’s based on other dated photos in this collection.

Also in this series are two (2) small manila envelopes marked Photos Folder 1 and Photos Folder 2. These contain thirty-nine (39) small studio photos and snapshots that are of the Conklin family, relatives and friends. Some individuals identified are: Emma Armand, Ella and Ray McDaniel, Mr. and Mrs. William Conklin, Diane Rummel and many others. There are also two (2) small 4”x3” tin type photos in a protective sheath in the manila envelope marked Photos Folder 1. These are in fair condition, the rest of the photos are in good condition. One tin type is of an unknown man by Oak Park Tin Type Gallery and the other is of an unknown woman. Half of these photos have dates. The photos in Folder 1 date from 1896-1903 and the Photos in Folder 2 date from 1893-1993. These folders contain lists of the individuals identified in the photos. (55 x Photos)

SERIES II.  CONKLIN FAMILY AND SCENERY

Three (3) Folders

Series Scope and Content Summary:

This series consist of three manila envelope “folders”. Two are small 10”x6” folders in Box 1 marked Conklin Family and Scenery Folder 2 and Folder 3 and one is a large 12”x8” manila envelope in Box 2 marked Conklin Family and Scenery Folder 1, Box 2. The items in this series consist of small studio portraits and snapshots of the Conklin family (approx. 8) or their residences located in Box 2. Some individuals identified include W.G. Conklin of Woodstock, Ill.; Estella Conklin, and Alice and Alonse (Alonze?) Conklin. Also in this series are photos of landscapes, including approx. nine (9) 9×5” scenery photo “cards” of scenes such as cattle, the Fourth of July in 1892 and other scenes by J.A. French Photographer and Publisher of Views of Choice Scenery from Keene, N.H located in Box 2. In Box 2, Folder 2 are three (3) 9×5” cards with photos of unidentified landscapes, and approx. 4”x3” and 7”x5” seven (7) photos of unidentified landscapes and residences in Box 2, Folder 3.  Photos are in good condition, the date of these are uncertain. SERIES III.  PORTRAITS (1898 – 1903)

Seven (7) Folders

Series Scope and Content Summary:

This series consist of fifty-three studio portraits contained in seven manila envelope “folders” either 10×6” or 12”x8” in size. The photos are the Conklins, relatives, and friends are in cardboard frames or thick paper folders encasing the photo. The photos range in size from 7×5” to 6×5” or smaller and appear to be in great condition. They date from 1898-1903. Some individuals identified in these portraits are: “A.J. Adams of of N.H., a friend”, Bert Conklin, Miss Lillian B. Morse, Edith M. Brayley, Elba N.Y.1903 and many others. In the folders are lists of those identified, about a third are not identified. Five(5) of the folders contain photos of individuals all from the same family. These families are : The Allen Family, The Barnes Family, The Hughes Family, Baker Family, and Unknown. (53 x Photos)

SERIES IV.  BATAVIA, N.Y. STUDIO PORTRAITS AND GROUP PHOTOS (1896 – 1913)

One (1) Folder

Series Scope and Content Summary:

This series consists of fifteen (15) photos ranging in size from 11×6” to 7×4”in a 12”x8” manila envelope “folder”. The majority of the photos were taken by Bosworth Studio in Batavia, N.Y. and are studio portraits. Four (4) photos are group portraits . The photos are in good condition and are in cardboard frames or thick paper folders embossed with designs or initials. Some of the individuals identified in the photos are: Mollie McGolstee, Elmer Brayley of Elba, N.Y. 1909, and Fred and Ellen Slocum to name a few. The photos date from 1896-1913. This folder has a list of the individuals identified in the photos. (15 x Photos)

Series Scope and Content Summary:

This series consist of 6×4” and 5×3” studio photos and snapshots of residences and individuals, Most of the individuals are unidentified and only three (3) appear to be identified. These individuals are: Mr. Calvin Calhoun, Estella and William, and Rachel Boyington. These photos are in good condition except for some yellowing and spots. They are in cardboard frames or sheaths. They are undated but likely date from the mid 1890’s to early 1900’s based on other items in the collection. This folder contains a list of those identified. (14 x Photos)

Series Scope and Content Summary:

This series consists of eight (8) items that are printed such as books and newspapers. This series consist of four (4) wedding invitations from 1894-1913, one Sacramento Union Auto section from 1921, one letter from Elva to Mr. Conklin 1938, a booklet by Henry Disston called the File in History from 1924and a Formula for Old Whiskey to name a few items. All items except the Whiskey Formula are in a folder labeled Print Folder 3.
