History Notes +

The Swiss Dairy was one of the most prominent semi-pro teams in Santa Cruz during the time, along with the Santa Cruz Seahawks. The club features a lot of Italian-American players, including Louie Castagnola, Dick Fassio, Nig Tagamini and brothers Paul Juhl and Johnny Reis.

Santa Cruz County had an affliction for the sport of baseball, Watsonville, Aptos, Soquel, Felton, Ben Lomond, Boulder Creek and Santa Cruz all had semi-pro squads during the late 1800’s and early 1900s. In the late 1890’s Santa Cruz got a professional team called the Santa Cruz Beachcombers, the name was later changed to the Sand Crabs. The Pacific States League that the Beachcombers were apart of was the highest level of organized baseball during the era on the West Coast. “While Santa Cruz County had much representation in professional baseball during baseball’s most popular era, its connection to the sport during the years surrounding World War II was not as strong. This was due to the fact that many young Santa Cruz men went off to fight in Europe and the Pacific during the war
