Series Scope and Content Summary
This series consists of five (5) boxes of photographs in black and white, and color ranging from 3″x5″ to 8″x10″ in size. The photos are from the Santa Cruz publication the Sun, which was active from 1986-1989. The photographs are primarily of locals and community events and activities. Some of the photos were never published.

One (1) Box with nine (9) Folders
Subseries Scope Content Summary
This subseries consists of nine (9) folders containing photographs of Santa Cruz locals or neighborhoods within one (1) box. The photos are of individuals of various ages, posing either in portraits or in ensemble photos at community events, or engaged in workplace activities. There are also some photos of neighborhoods and of military veterans. The photos are primarily in black and white or sepia and date from the early to mid-1980’s. The folders are labeled as follows: Personalities (3 folders), Military Vets (1), Elders (1), Neighborhoods and their People (2 folders), Kids/Families (1), and People and Places (1).

Sub-Subseries Scope and Content Summary
The first folder labeled “Personalities” contains: approximately forty (4) 3×5 studio portrait shots of individuals, some identified with names on the reverse, and many unidentified. Some of the identified individuals include: Tim Eagen, B. Modern, “Fast Edy”, Charles Prentiss, Franklin Avery, Jane Harlow, Beth Regards, Paul Schraub, Eric Mathes, and A. West. The photos are bust portraits (from the shoulders upward) and there are some duplicates. Also in this folder are about fifty (50) black and white or sepia 5×5 and 8×10 photos of various individuals (and one dog) engaged in activities such as surfing or playing instruments. Some individuals are identified and many are not. Identified individuals include: Mary Holmes (2 photos), A. The second folder labeled “Personalities” contains: approximately eighty (80) 5×7, 8×12, and 3×5 black and white and sepia tone photographs of various individuals. The third folder labeled “Personalities”: This folder contains approximately sixty (60) photos and 5 sheets of negatives with twenty (20) photos on each sheet. Photos are either portraits or ensemble photos and range in size from 5×7 to 8×12. The fourth folder labeled “Military Vets”: This folder contains approx. thirty (30) black and white and color photographs of military veterans and anti-war protests. There is also one (1) 1985 Vin Rouge Red Table Wine label and one (1) North Defense Trust brochure in this folder. Some identified personages and subjects include: Concors(e?) [label is difficult to read] Manual Weapons Station (3), Veteran Ray Peterssen (3), Admiral Noel Sayler (1), Colonel James Strigham (1), among others. Photos are primarily 8×12 in size, with approx. fifteen (15) 5×7 photos.

The Elders Folder: This folder contains approx. twenty (20) black and white 8×12 and 5×7 photographs. There is one (1) small 3×5 color photograph. The photos are of seniors either posed in portraits or engaged in activities at community events during the 1980’s such as book fairs and Christmas events with Grey Bears(4 photos). Some individuals in these photos are unidentified and many are not. Some identified people include: Lucy Haessler (2 photos), Lemore Wickerson (2), and Don Gartner (1).

Neighborhoods and their People Folder (2 folders): This folder contains approx. forty (40) 8×12 black and white photos of areas such as the Capitola Mall, Beach Flats, Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf, and Pacific Avenue. There are also about twenty 5×7 photos and a packet of about ten (10) negatives. Many of the individuals in the photos are unidentified within group ensemble photos with descriptions such as “Beach Flats Community “or “Surfing Community. The second folder contains approx. fifty (50) black and white 8×12 photos of mostly unidentified individuals engaged in activities or of scenes in communities.

Landmarks and Architecture Folder 1 contains: about fifty (50) 8×12, 5×7 and 3×5 black and white and sepia photos of buildings on Pacific Avenue, Santa Cruz, restaurants, houses, and some of individuals enjoying activities within the town. There are a few 4×7 color photos (about 5) that appear to be of damaged buildings and injured people in Watsonville possibly during the Oct.17th 1989 Earthquake. The second folder contains: about forty (40) 8×12, 5×7, and 3×5 black and white, sepia, and color photos of Lighthouses such as Pigeon Point, the SC Boardwalk, and house in the YWCA Historic Homes Tour among other subjects.
