Series Scope and Content Summary:
This series consists of approx. eighty-three photos of subjects such as the Dye family home; Dr. Bruce Dye’s chiropractic business on Soquel and Main St. in a building that still looks much the same; the Monterey Country Club Golf course of which the Dye’s were members; a Watsonville barber shop belonging to William and Grover Dye (brothers of Bruce); photos of San Francisco City Hall after the1906 earthquake; photos of Southern Pacific Railroad Co. trains; Charlotte and Bruce Dye at a pet cemetery; and much more. Also in this series are two small books, one an agenda book from the San Francisco Chronicle containing recipes and shopping lists, the other a leather-bound notepad containing addresses and salad recipes. Items are in large 12×9” or small 9×6” acid-free envelopes being called “folders” for this collection. Date range: 1900’s-1950’s

SUBSERIES I.A. DYE HOME, BUSINESS, AND MONTEREY GOLF CLUB (1940s – 1950s)

Subseries Scope and Content Summary:
This subseries consists of one (1) 9×6” acid-free envelope “folder” containing approx. thirty-eight (38) photos in color and black and white, approx. 3×5” in size. These photos are in fair condition, hardly yellowed or faded, but with very curled edges—so much so that the photos are somewhat difficult to uncurl for viewing purposes. These photos include images of Bruce Dye and his wife Charlotte Dye in their later years standing in front of their Monterey Bay Heights home and posing with automobiles, family members, and pets; as well as color photos of the home known as “Lone Pine”; the surrounding garden; Bruce , Charlotte Dye and their family golfing at a place identified as the Monterey Bay Golf and Country Club Golf course, photos of the Dye Chiropractic business located on Soquel and Main Street during the 1940’s, and more. SUBSERIES I.B. BARBER SHOP (1900s – 1920s)

Subseries Scope and Content Summary:
This subseries consists of one (1) 9×6” acid-free envelope “folder” that contains two (2) photos made into postcards. The photos are black and white and 4×6” in size, they are of a barber shop. One photo postcard depicts a man in a white coat posing in front of the storefront; the other depicts three men standing in front of barber chairs and one man seated, inside the barber shop. On the reverse of this photo postcard is a note about how Will, Proprietor of the barber ship will send a large picture of the shop sometime to his relative Bruce Dye, and how the proprietors of the shop, Will and Grover are doing well. These photos are undated but are likely from the 1900’s as are the majority of photos in this collection. On the outside of the folder for these photos is a noted identifying William and Grover Dye as owners of the Barber Shop and relatives of Dr. Bruce Dye, chiropractor. The Barber Shop was located on Sudden Street, likely in Watsonville. The photos are in good condition. Estimated date range: 1900’s-1920’s

SUBSERIES I.C. SAN FRANCISCO (1900s – 1920s)

Subseries Scope and Content Summary:
This subseries consists of one (1) approx. 9×6” acid-free envelope “folder” containing approx. fifteen (15) photos which may be of scenes in San Francisco, CA. The black and white photos range in size from 3×4” to 5×3” and are in good condition except for some slight curling and yellowing at the edges. Photos in this subseries include: a photo of a trolley tour filled with people bearing the sign “taken at the Cliff House, San Francisco, CA—this photo has been turned into a postcard—individuals in the photo include Charlotte Dye; two photos taken in a glass greenhouse—one of Charlotte the other possibly of Bruce Dye her husband; photo of a cityscape with horse buggies and trolleys—the word “Express” is clearly visible on one horse buggy which renders it a fine, historical shot; photo of unidentified church; photo of an unidentified house flying the American flag; photo of a woman crossing a street in front of statue and a Hotel; eight (7) 3×4” photos featuring the ruins of a building featuring a distinctive-looking tower with a domed cupola and three smaller towers—these photos have been identified as City Hall; one (1) 3×4” photo of an unidentified cityscape showing a domed skyscraper, street vendors, and passerby. The photos of ruins may be of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Date range: 1900’s-1920’s

SUBSERIES I.D. SANTA CRUZ COASTLINE (1900s – 1930s)

Subseries Scope and Content Summary:
This subseries consists of one (1) acid-free 9×6” envelope “folder” containing eleven (11) black and white, 5×3” photos that are in good condition with only some slight curling at the edges that does not detract from the photos’ quality. These photos are all of cliffs, the coastline, beaches, and scenic views of the ocean and cliffs that have been tentatively identified as views taken from what is now West Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz, CA; the Natural Bridges area, and the coastline north of Santa Cruz. One picture depicts an unidentified individual on the beach, and two (2) show a distinctive-looking pagoda-like two-story structure and fence that appears to be a viewing tower of sorts along a jagged coastline. There are no dates on these photos. Estimated date range: 1900’s-1930’s

SUBSERIES I.E. SOUTHERN PACIFIC TRAINS (1900s – 1930s)

Subseries Scope and Content Summary:
This subseries consists of one 9×6” envelope “folder” containing six (6) black and white photos ranging in size from 3×6” to 4×4”. The photos are in good to fair condition with some fading, creases, and yellowing on two (2) of the photos. These photos are mainly of trains. Two photos depict a train engine marked “1297” and another showing the engine and several cars of the train with a conductor leaning out the window and the words “Southern Pacific” and number “1290” visible. One photo depicts thirteen (13) men and woman posing while sitting and standing in what appears to be a train car—one of the woman second from the right in the bottom row is likely Charlotte Dye; one photo, slightly faded shows five men and woman standing on Southern Pacific train “1266”; another photo depicts a train engine and three men on the tracks (this photo is yellowing with some creases and spots); the final photo in this subseries depicts two horse-drawn wagons and four men loading boxes onto the wagon from a storage building (this photo has some creases and tears). SUBSERIES I.F. PET CEMETERY (1940s)

Subseries Scope and Content Summary:
This subseries consists of one (1) 9×6” envelope “folder” containing seven (7) black and white 3×5” photos showing Bruce Dye and Charlotte Dye kneeling by tiny, white, dog-shaped grave markers at a pet cemetery which is likely Delaveaga Pet Cemetery in the 1940’s. These photos are in relatively good condition with some slight curling at the edges. The photos show Dr. Bruce Dye and Charlotte Dye kneeling and standing by the graves, and include close-ups and landscape shots of the cemetery and grave markers, and a wreath laid at the grave marker belonging to Dr. Bruce Dye of Soquel. Date range: 1940’s

SUBSERIES I.G. AGENDAS, RECIPES AND NOTEPADS (1920s)

Subseries Scope and Content Summary:
This subseries consists of two (2) small, approx. 4×3” and 4×2” books. One book bears in gold lettering the words: “Compliments of the San Francisco Chronicle 1921, San Francisco, California”. Inside is information such as the S.F. Chronicle advertising rates, brief business laws, points of Constitutional Law, legal holidays, antidotes for poisons, help in case of accidents and other useful information. Also in the book are notes which appear to be many recipes or items purchased from April 1921-Dec.1921. Some pages may be missing. Recipes include: pumpkin pie, custard pie, fig pudding, cheese straws and other sauces and foods squeezed into the tiny spaces of the agenda in a slightly difficult hand to read. In the back of the book there are maps, and in the addresses and cash accounts section of the agenda are written more recipes for items such as “Devils food” and “Gold Medal Cake”. Also in this subseries is a 4×2” notebook with tan leather binding and the words “Notes” etched or burnt into the cover along with a pinecone and “Santa Cruz, CA”. Inside the notepad are approx. seven (7) pages containing an address, and what appear to be recipes for different types of salads. Date range: 1920’s

SUBSERIES I.H. STUDIO PHOTOS (1900s – 1920s)

Subseries Scope and Content Summary:
This subseries consists of one (1) approx. 15×12” envelop “folder” containing two (2) photographs that were likely taken at professional studios, although the studio name is absent from the photos. One photo approx. 5×5” is of an unidentified woman standing in a garden and holding a rose. The photo is in sepia tones, and slightly faded and mounted on thick, black cardboard. The other photo is approx. 5 ½” by 3” and is an oval-shaped portrait of an unidentified young man inside a beige cardboard folder with an embossed logo of a torch wrapped with a ribbon encircled by a wreath. The photos are in good condition except for some barely visible fading and yellowing. There are no dates on these photos. Estimated date range: 1900’s-1920’s

Subseries Scope and Content Summary:
This subseries consists of one (2) approx. 11×12” envelop wrapped in acid-free paper. The envelope is addressed to Dr. Bruce Dye and Mrs. Bruce Dye of Soquel, CA and the return address states “Photograph Do Not Fold” from Irving F. Priest Jr. of Fresno,CA. The envelope is dated 1948 on the postage stamp and is in fair condition with many wrinkles, creases, folds and spots. Date range: mid-1940’s

SERIES II. PHOTOS AND POSTCARDS (1900s – 1950s)

Series Scope and Content Summary:
This series consists of approx. one-hundred and sixty items belonging to the Dye Family. This series includes photos and postcards; about one-third of the postcards contain pleasantries exchanged between the Dye family and their friends the Augustus family. Photos in this series are divided by subject and include photos of animals such as horses, dogs, and deer; photos of men and women hunting, swimming, horseback riding or engaged in other sports and recreational activities; photos of various (mainly unidentified) buildings or people working in shops such as barber shops; and photos of Bruce and Charlotte Dye in their later years vacationing with their camper-trailer in the 1950’s. Items in this series range from fair to good condition. The majority of the photos have curled edges, creases and/or tears. The 1950’s photos are in good condition and are the only color photos in this series. Items are in 12×9” envelopes being called “folders” for this series. Date range: 1900-1950’s

SUBSERIES II.A. LANDSCAPES AND ANIMALS (1900s – 1950s)

Subseries Scope and Content Summary:
This subseries consists of approx. forty-eight (48) black and white 5×3” photos and one color 3×3” photo in an approx. 15×12” envelope “folder”. The photos in this subseries are primarily of landscapes with sloping hills, and/ or lakes and rivers. Some of the photos contain individuals in the middle of the landscape posing or swimming or sometimes automobiles. The landscapes are mostly unidentified though some have been tentatively identified as Watsonville in the years 1918-1920.The single photo in color is a Kodacolor Print dated 10/24/1948. Also in this subseries are about fifteen photos of animals such as dogs, horses and deer, and photos of beaches and waves (about twenty or more). These photos are in fair condition with much curling of the edges, spotting, and some cracking. Date range: 1900’s-1950’s

These photos are of vehicles such as horse and buggies, planes, various models of automobiles (some with people in the photos); trains, and a steamboat called the Davenport I. Two of these photos were turned into postcards—both are of trains, one with the names “Visalia Electric Railroad Company” visible on the cars, and the other showing people walking from the cars of a train stopped on tracks amongst a landscape with snowy mountains. This subseries consists of eleven (11) black and white photos ranging in size from 3×4” to 4×6” in size. These photos are primarily of unidentified buildings, and structures such as bridges and statues. Examples of the photos include: an unidentified (blurry) photo of a bridge; unidentified photo of a turreted building with a sculpture of an eagle on a pedestal in front of it; photo tentatively identified as a Watsonville street in the 1920’s; unidentified photo of a street and houses with horse-and-buggies out front; photo of a house with sign stating “Dr. B.T. An example of activities featured in these photos includes: one postcard showing two men logging with a note on the reverse to “Sadie” from Mrs. Joe Augustus; five (5) photos of men posing with dead deer and/or hunting dogs; men and/ or men and women posing with dead deer, dogs and/or rifles; two (2) photos of a man shooting in the forest with a rifle; photo of seven (7) men and children posing with rifles; four (4) photos of a man, woman, and children riding horses; photo of about six horses and three unidentified people amongst a landscape with sloping hills; a very blurry photo of five unidentified individuals swimming and more. SUBSERIES II.E. TINY CAMPER-TRAILER PHOTOS (1940s – 1950s)

Subseries Scope and Content Summary:
This subseries consists of approx. sixteen (16) black and white photos and four (4) color photos ranging in size from 3×2” to 3 ½”x3” in size, and also two (2) 3×2” negatives. These photos are primarily taken at what may be a camping site, or area for people traveling with trailers. The photos include shots of automobiles and silver trailers, and a lake; a man and woman in front of the trailer; man in a field with a dog; man with a gold bag; and various shots of the trailers and surrounding forest and meadows the trailer is parked in. The trailers in this photo are similar in model and design to air-stream trailers. The negatives are difficult to make out and appear to be of a street and a house. The individuals in the photos are unidentified but bear facial similarities to Dr. Bruce Dye and his wife Charlotte and are likely them in their senior years. The photos in this subseries are experiencing some slight curling on the edges but are in otherwise good condition. Four of these photos are Kodacolor Prints and are dated Oct. 1949. Date range: mid-1940’s-1950’s

Subseries Scope and Content Summary:
This subseries consists of one (1) folder containing approx. forty-three (43) postcards and photos turned into postcards. About one-third of the postcards contain writing and the rest are blank. The postcards depict unidentified men and woman posing or amongst landscapes. Two identified photos are tentatively identified as the 1918 Watsonville parade. Other photos depict houses, automobiles, Charlotte Dye, a man who may be Bruce Dye at a place captioned “Gil Rau springs July 15 ‘16”; a building captioned “The Farmer’s Merchants Bank of Reedley, Cal.”; men working in the fields; women posing with guns and birds with the caption “We are at Bravo (?) Lake”, and more. The postcards are primarily to Mr. Mrs. Joe Augustus from “Mabel” and “Della”; or to Bruce Dye from “Will”. Also in this subseries is a 6×3” Christmas card to Bruce Dye from a man named Norman Pendleton (?) . Date range: 1900’s-1920’s

Series Scope and Content Summary:
This series contains approximately two hundred and twenty (220) photos in four (4) folders. The photos range in size from 3×3” to 5×4” in size. These black and white photos include group photos of the Dye family including Bruce Dye and his brothers William and Grover Dye, Bertha Dye and Mary Dye. There are also about seventy (70) photos of unidentified individuals either posing in landscapes inside houses, engaged in various activities. These individuals include men, women and children. Also in this series are approx. sixty (60) photos of Charlotte and Bruce Dye depicting them in landscapes often accompanied by automobiles. These photos appear to depict them in their early years (mid-twenties) to middle age. Date range: 1900’s-1940’s

Subseries Scope and Content Summary:
This subseries consists of approx. seventy black and white photos ranging in size from 3×3” to 5×4” in size. These photos are in fair condition with much curling around the edges and some yellowing and creases. These photos are of unidentified individuals posing seated or standing in landscapes or in home environments. These individuals include a man whom may be Bruce Dye posing in a rocky landscape, a beach, and near a river. Other individuals include a woman playing a guitar, a child at a piano, an elderly gentleman with a model ship, a baby, and much more. These photos are likely of the Dye family, relatives, and family friends. Date range: 1900s-1930s

SUBSERIES III.B. CHARLOTTE AND BRUCE DYE (1900s – 1940s)
One (1) Folder, approx. sixty (60) photos
Subseries Scope and Content Summary:
This subseries consists of one (1) folder of approx. sixty (60) black and white photos ranging in size from a small oval 2x 2 ½” photo to 5×3” square photos. These photos are of a man and woman identified on the reverse of some of the photos as Dr. Bruce Dye and his wife Charlotte. More than fifty of the photos are only of Charlotte Dye, and show her posing in the wilderness near rivers, and mountains, posing with golf clubs, automobiles, fishing lines, and even what appears to be a rifle. In the majority of the photos Charlotte Dye appears to be in her mid -twenties to early thirties in age. A few photos show her in later years accompanied by young children. About eight (6) photos identified as Bruce Dye depict him posing with an automobile, in front of a house, and in a meadow wearing a distinctive trench coat. Also in the subseries is a photo of an automobile with sign “Just Married Let us Alone” on the back of it, which is tentatively identified as the “Dye Honeymoon Trip”. These photos are in fair condition with curled edges, fading, and some yellowing and creases, however they present a good look at period fashion and changes in fashion during the early 1900’s to the 1920’s. There are also about fifteen or more photos where vehicles are present, providing a look at automobiles of the time. Estimated date range: mid 1900’s-1940’s

This subseries consists of two (2) folders containing approx. ninety (90) black and white photos ranging in size from 3×3” to 5×4” in size. These photos are of groups of individuals ranging from two individuals up to sixteen or more individuals. The men, women, and children in these photos are mostly unidentified but are likely members of the Dye family of their friends. The people in the photos are posing in front of houses, beaches, rocky outcrops, in front of rivers, forests, tipis (likely a campsite), even on horseback. Some identified individuals include: Bruce and Charlotte Dye; Grover , Bertha, Mary and William Dye, who were relatives of the Dye family.
