SERIES II.  WAR TIME JOURNAL OF RICHARD TRENBETH (1939 – 1945)

One (1) Folder

Series Scope and Content Summary

This series contains a war time journal written by Richard Trenbeth.  He wrote and published this journal for his family in 1990.  It traces his time in the Navy Reserve Officers Training Corps at Georgia Tech.  The journal also includes his military training at various locations in the eastern United States.  He then assumed command of the LST 828 and sailed it through the Panama Canal to Pearl Harbor with a stop in Nicaragua due to a medical emergency.  LST’s were nicknamed by their crews Large Slow Targets.  He then sailed on to Ulithi in the eastern Pacific – one night when he was returning to his ship the small boat he was on ran out of gas fortunately he was able to signal his ship or they would have drifted out into the China Sea.  The LST 828 participated in the Invasion of Okinawa in which it was an ammunition ship supporting the radar picket destroyers.  In August 1945 he was part of a convoy going back to Pearl Harbor when they received notification the war was over, they requested permission to test pyrotechnics but were told to save them until it was dark.
