Edward E. Prince (1896-1972) was born in Boulder Creek, California, the son of John Harrison Prince and Hattie (Bacon) Prince and the grandson of George W. and Maggie Prince, all early settlers of Boulder Creek. In 1909 Edward graduated from the eighth grade at Boulder Creek Elementary School. Like many other youngsters of that generation, he then went to work, getting a job that would help support his family and perhaps lead to a future career. By 1911, at the age of fourteen, he had a full-time job at Tanner’s Drug Store, on the ground floor of the St. George Hotel on Pacific Avenue. From 1908 to 1912, Edward kept lively, detailed diaries and took many photographs of his life as a youngster in Santa Cruz. In December 1911, the family moved to San Pedro, in Los Angeles, where Edward got another job in a drug store. While continuing to work, he took night classes in pharmacology at the University of Southern California. He passed the state licensing exam and went on to a successful career, eventually owning two drug stores. The bulk of the Edward Prince Collection is from his formative years working at Tanner’s Drug Store.
