The Santa Cruz Art League was founded in 1919 in Santa Cruz, California by a group of artists informally known as the Jolly Daubers. Originally known as the “Arts and Crafts Group,” the League was dedicated to the promotion and exhibition of traditional, representational art created in the region. This collection contains copies of the Constitution and By-Laws and Amendments, administrative reports and notes, minutes of general membership meetings, Board of Directors meetings, Beaux Arts Ball committee meetings, treasurer’s reports, membership rosters, photographs and scrapbooks of League sponsored events and fund raisers. The collection also contains correspondence and newspaper articles pertinent to the Santa Cruz Art League controversy which occurred in 1981, surrounding the inclusion of abstract art in the exhibitions. Santa Cruz Sentinel newspaper clippings of exhibit announcements, art technique demonstrations, lectures, scholarship award winners, and some obituaries of officers and members are also included. Santa Cruz County Art Club was founded in 1958 to uphold the further continuance of traditionally representative art. This collection contains membership rosters for the years 1958 and 1962, minutes of the meetings held between June 12, 1958 and January 3, 1963, the Constitution and By-Laws of the S.C.C.
