This collection was likely assembled by Marie Scott, whom took photographs of California Mission in the 1940’s. The collection was donated by Janet Carter of Laguna Niguel, CA in 1976 to the Santa Cruz County Historical Museum (now the Santa Cruz MAH). The prints were slated for exhibit in the Fall of 1976 by Albert Schadel, the County Museum Coordinator at that time. The Photo Album in this collection was donated by Janet Carter, at a later date, though it is not certain when.

Abstract
This collection consists of forty (40) black and white, 13×5” salon prints taken by Marie Scott in the 1940’s. These prints are of missions throughout California and include missions such as Mission San Juan Bautista, Mission San Juan Capistrano, Mission Santa Barbara, Mission San Rafael Arcangel, Mission La Purisima Concepcion, and many more.

Marie T. Scott (born 1903- died 1976)
Marie T. Scott was born in Los Angeles, California. In 1935 she graduated with a B.E. Degree from the University of Los Angeles. After graduation she attended several Universities to complete graduate studies. These included: Columbia University, Loyola University, Immaculate Heart College, and University of Hawaii. Her studies led to teaching high school at Carver Junior High School and Alexander Hamilton High School. Eventually returned to Los Angles where she became Chair of the Art Department at Los Angeles Valley College. Over her lifetime, Marie studied various mediums of art, including watercolor and photography. She was a student at Imogene Cunningham’s and often told stories about her recollections of studying with artist Andre Lhote , a Cubist-style painter and sculptor who rose to prominence in Paris after World War I and into the 1920’s (“Andre Lhote”, Wikipedia, pub. 7/2/2015 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andr%C3%A9_Lhote). Marie exhibited her work at several county fairs including the California State Fair, Los Angeles County Fair, and with the Southern California Watercolor Society, and in galleries in San Francisco, and at the Third Street Gallery. She won several awards for her watercolors including First Prize at the Ebell Club and Second Prize during the Exhibit of Southern California Watercolor Society. Forty photographs taken of California Missions by Marie are in this Collection. It is believed she took these photos in the 1940’s (biographical info. from: S.C. County Historical Museum donor file, and letter from Janet Carter 7/14/1976).
SERIES I. MISSION PRINTS (1940s)
Series Scope and Content Summary:
This series consists of forty (40) or more prints of photographs taken by Marie Scott of various California Missions in the 1940’s. The photographs are mounted in white cardboard frames, some of which lift up to reveal the caption of the photo. The photos were taken of nineteen different missions throughout California. For some of the Missions only one photo was taken; for some, as many as four were taken. The subjects of these photos include alters, religious sculptures and figures of worship, doors, colonnades, gardens, monks, cathedral pews, exteriors and interiors of the Missions, and many other focal points and arresting details such as crucifixes, crumbling walls at San Juan Capistrano and Nuestra Senora de Soledad ,bell towers, and much more. The prints include lovely and enchanting photos of Missions such as San Diego De Alcala, Santa Ines, San Carlos Borromeo De Carmelo, San Juan Bautista, San Buenaventura, and many more. The prints are in excellent condition, though some of the frames are coming loose.. Some of the prints include the date the Mission was founded on the reverse of the cardboard. All the photos feature the artist’s name “Marie T. Scott written on the reverse. Box 1 contains approx. twenty-eight photographic prints and Box 2 contains fourteen prints.
